Resources for starting your own business

Dreaming’s easy. But turning an idea into a reality takes a whole lot of guts, determination and patience, say the experts.

As with any major endeavour, knowledge is the key to success. Fortunately, there are many resources in Edmonton (and Canada) that can provide critical information and support to you as you take the leap.

1. Alberta Entrepreneurs’ Association (aea.ab.ca) – This education and networking group for entrepreneurs welcomes non-members to their meetings, held every third Tuesday at the University of Alberta Faculty Club. RSVP on their website.
2. Alberta Women Entrepreneurs (awe.business.com) – Coaching, workshops, networking events, business advising and financing for women in business. Advising is available for women who haven’t yet started their company.

3. Junior Achievers (jacan.org) – If you’re in high school (or younger still), this nationwide business education agency can help you get started. JA offers programs to help youth understand the risks and rewards of starting a business, solve business challenges and connect with business communities.

4. Bizlaunch (bizlaunch.ca) – This company offers training to budding entrepreneurs across Canada. For $69.95 a month, a coach will work with you by correspondence as you build or revise a business plan.

5. Entrepreneurship Learning Centre (www.elcnetwork.ca) – Expertise via video conferencing. E-meet entrepreneurs across Alberta in realtime. The organization has a network of 28 business development centres within the province.

6. The Business Link (canadabusiness.ca/alberta/) – Support with starting up a company, financing it, marketing, legal issues, e-business and much, much more. Free networking events. Free one-on-one consultation with guest advisors, including management consultants, lawyers and accountants. The program takes a summer break, but resumes in October 2007.
